Vista Grande Public Library’s Spring Book Sale, May 8-10, 2025

One of the most popular community events of the year returns! Vista Grande Public Library’s 3-day Spring Book Sale runs Thursday, May 8 through Saturday, May 10, back with two favorite events: Thursday’s Early Bird Sale from 9am—10am and Saturday’s $10-a-Bag sale.

Location: Vista Grande Public Library, 14 Avenida Torreon (in Eldorado), 505-466-7323.

Sale hours:
• May 8, Thursday: 9 – 10 am, EARLY BIRD ENTRY, $25 entry fee. Great for booksellers and anyone wanting early shopping.
• May 8 & 9, Thursday & Friday: 10 am – 6 pm, free entry.
• May 10, Saturday: 10 am – 3 pm, $10-A-BAG SALE, free entry. We supply the bag for hardcover, mass market, & trade paperback books (excepting specially priced items).

Thousands of items for every age and interest, at the lowest prices around! Books and media on Thursday and Friday are just $1 to $3; tabletop and gift books $5. On Saturday, fill a book bag (we supply the bag!) for just $10.

Join us on May 8th from 5 to 7 PM for the opening reception of Summer Winter, an exhibition of handwoven garments by Margaret Roach Wheeler and textile artworks by Mahota Textiles, the first tribally owned textile company in the U.S. This exhibition highlights Wheeler’s contributions to contemporary Indigenous fashion design; brings attention to the broader network of Indigenous craft traditions in the U.S.; and pays tribute to Indigenous self-determination. Members of the press are welcome to join us starting at 4:30 PM for an exhibition preview. From 5 to 6 PM, Wheeler will give an artist talk.

This opening reception coincides with the opening of the inaugural Native Fashion Week Santa Fe. Headed by Indigenous fashion expert Amber-Dawn Bear Robe, Native Fashion Week Santa Fe celebrates Indigenous designers, showcasing their innovations to entertain, educate, and evolve the fashion landscape. In collaboration with Native Fashion Week Santa Fe, our sister gallery, form & concept, is hosting a trunk show by award winning jeweler Neeko Garcia (Diné (Navajo)/Hispanic) in the gallery shop.

Hosted by Violet Crown, and a continuation of the Santa Fe International's Film Series, The Joy Luck Club by Amy Tan is a novel exploring the complex relationships between four Chinese-American immigrant mothers and their daughters, focusing on the cultural and generational differences between them. The story unfolds through a series of interwoven narratives, revealing each mother's past in China and the challenges they face in adapting to a new life in America, as well as their daughters' struggles with identity and expectations.

The HSE graduation ceremony is a celebration of the students’ hard work and dedication in achieving their High School Equivalency Certificate. It’s a formal event where graduates are recognized for their accomplishments and receive their diplomas. This ceremony marks a significant step forward, enabling them to pursue further education, advance in their careers, and achieve their personal goals.

Hosted by Violet Crown, and a continuation of our Film Series, American Fiction is a satirical dramedy film by Cord Jefferson, exploring themes of racial representation in literature and the publishing industry. The story follows Thelonious "Monk" Ellison, a Black literature professor, who becomes a pseudonymous success writing a potboiler novel that satirizes stereotypical Black narratives. Through Monk's experiences, the film critiques the expectations and pressures placed on Black writers and the ways in which Black identity is often portrayed in popular culture.

Santa Fe Community College will host a Broadband Networking/Job Fair from 3 to 5 p.m. Friday, May 16, at the Santa Fe Higher Education Center, 1950 Siringo Road. More than 300 certified Fiber Optic Technician graduates will be invited from across New Mexico to attend. The event is free and open to all New Mexicans interested about careers, education and training for New Mexico’s broadband industry.
