A new space made specifically for teens is opening up on Santa Fe’s Southside—and no, it’s not a bowling alley.

Data from the New Mexico Department of Health is now showing that kids who identify as Hispanic or Latino are at the bottom of the list when it comes to vaccination rates in the state.

Programs of a different kind are sprouting all across New Mexico’s education system with one singular goal in mind– encouraging kids to get to class by walking or biking. 

But, as KSFR’s Bryce Dix reports, advocates, teachers, and parents are divided on how truly safe it is to let our kids bike the streets.

In June, several whistleblowers at Fort Bliss military base came forward about the living conditions of migrant children. They allege unsafe conditions, panic attacks, and even children suffering from depression. Reporter Taylor Velazquez spoke with Bernardo Rafael Cruz from the ACLU of Texas, who’s been inside the facility, to talk about the notorious abuse.

One hundred students at the Santa Fe Community College who also have children to raise will receive $400 to $500 dollars a month this fall to help them do just that. When the pandemic forced schools and childcare centers to shut down, more than five million American mothers gave up their jobs.  Currently, The New York Times reports that 1.3 million of these women are still out of work.

Young musicians will have the chance to step into the spotlight for an upcoming event put on by the Santa Fe Boys and Girls Club. The ‘Battle of the Bands’ seeks to give young artists in the area an opportunity to win prize money and valuable first-hand experience.
