Nativescape welcomes Navajo artist and poet Shonto Begay (Navajo) joins Nativescape for a special reading of his 1995 book, Navajo: Visions and Voices Across the Mesa. Shonto Begay a Navajo painter and storyteller. His strong support of environmental issues is not only offered through his paintings, but in his capacity as an author, poet and illustrator, and his leadership in community projects like youth murals and painting workshops. His work has been included in exhibitions at the Museum of Northern Arizona in Flagstaff, AZ; the Arizona State Museum, University of Arizona in Tucson, Utah Museum of Fine Arts, in Salt Lake City, and the Phoenix Art Museum to name a few. His work is in the collections of Wheelwright Museum of the American Indian, Santa Fe, NM; The Booth Western Art Museum, Cartersville, GA; Heard Museum, Phoenix, AZ; Institute of American Indian Art, Museum of Contemporary Native Art, Santa Fe, NM; The James Museum of Western and Wildlife Art, St. Petersburg, FL; and the National Museum of the American Indian, Smithsonian Institution, Washington, D.C.. He received an Associate of Fine Arts degree at the Institute of American Indian Arts in Santa Fe, and a Bachelor of Arts from California College of Arts. He worked for over a decade in the 1980’s as a National Park Service ranger at Grand Teton National Park in Wyoming and the Navajo National Monument in Arizona.
