State Hemp Production Regulations


New Mexico State University regents approved state regulations for hemp cultivation during a special meeting last Thursday.  Kristie Garcia, public information officer for the New Mexico Department of Agriculture, says the university regents’ approval is necessary because UNM is a land grant college.  The state agriculture department submitted the rules for licensing and inspection of crops to ensure compliance with New Mexico and federal laws. Hemp is cultivated around the world for its industrial and commercial uses.  Hemp belongs to the cannabis sativa species, and is controlled by federal drug laws banning cultivation of cannabis, which contains a psychoactive substance THC.
