March 2 - SF County DWI Specialist Says Tough Repeat Offender Laws Are Just One Part Of The Solution

DWI has made no shortage of local headlines lately. Scott Owens, formerly acquitted in a vehicular homicide case stemming from a crash that killed four teens, is back in jail on his third DWI charge. And yesterday, Governor Susana Martinez signed into law a bill that makes it a second-degree felony to be convicted of eight or more DWIs, bumping frequent offenders up into a tier of stricter sentencing guidelines. Peter Olson, DWI Prevention Specialist with Santa Fe County, says that while tougher laws for repeat offenders are a needed improvement, that’s just one piece of the puzzle.
