Despite being one of the few elected Republicans to denounce GOP presidential hopeful Donald Trump for his remarks on Mexican immigrants, Governor Susana Martinez’s detractors accuse her of pushing an “anti-immigrant” agenda on the driver’s license issue here at home. Dozens of advocates are expected Monday to descend on New Mexico's Capitol to denounce Martinez, the nation’s only Latina Governor, for supporting a Republican proposal to make the state compliant under the federal REAL ID Act. The bill would allow immigrants in the country illegally to obtain state driver's permits.
New Mexico and the U.S. Department of Energy have agreed to 74-million dollars in settlements over dozens of permit violations stemming from a radiation leak that forced the closure of the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant. The settlements are the largest ever negotiated between a state and the Energy Department and come after months of negotiations. WIPP, the nation's only underground nuclear waste repository, has been closed since February 2014, when a container of waste burst and released radiation that contaminated parts of the facility. Five special agents from the state Attorney General's Office are among New Mexico law enforcement officers sworn in as special deputy U.S. marshals to work on a multi-agency fugitive task force. The Marshal's Service says the newly sworn-in special deputy marshals also include an Albuquerque police officer and a Bernalillo County sheriff's deputy. Attorney General's spokesman James Hallinan says the office has previously worked in conjunction with the task force but that this is the first time that special agents from the office have been sworn in as special deputy marshals with the task force. U.S. Marshal Conrad Candelaria says the special deputy marshals will be assigned to Marshals Service offices in Albuquerque and Santa Fe.
