April 18 First News: WIPP Officials Provide Public With Update on Radiation Leak (Listen)

Waste Isolation Pilot Plant officials have announced that they believe they’ve found the location of the radiation leak that prompted closure of the nuclear waste dump two months ago. Published reports say WIPP officials need to make more trips into the half-mile deep repository to further investigate the leak. The Department of Energy updated the community on the incident during a meeting held in Carlsbad last night.

The U.S. Justice Department is seeking community input on possible reforms for the Albuquerque Police Department over its use of force. It’s planning public meetings the week after next. This follows the agency’s scathing report on what it called excessive force and a culture of abuse and aggression at the Albuquerque Police Department. APD officers have shot 37 men since 2010, killing 23.

Meantime, University of New Mexico professor David Correia tells KSFR one issue of concern in the DOJ report is APD’s lack of training of officers on its SWAT teams:*****041814-Correia-1 :17*****Correia also telling KSFR that he’s still waiting for additional videos.

The City of Santa Fe has announced the new executive director of its Convention and Visitor’s Bureau—he’s Randy Randall, a longtime tourism industry professional. Randall, whose experience includes ten years as general manager of the Eldorado Hotel, begins his new post on Monday.  City Manager Brian Snyder is quoted in a city news release saying: “Randy has deep roots in the business over a 45-year career. He has the confidence of the community, and I know he’ll plug right in with our partners in the industry,”

Gates at the city’s impound lot at 1142 Siler Road open at eight-am, with the auction beginning at 9:30. You’ll need cash or a money order…. And any vehicles you purchase need to be off the lot by five-pm Monday.
