Each session of this course will focus on one production in the 2023 opera season — The Flying Dutchman (Wagner), Tosca (Puccini), Rusalka (Dvorák), Pelléas et Mélisande (Debussy), and Orfeo (Monteverdi). All sessions will feature extensive video or audio excerpts, a wealth of visual imagery, a behind-the-scenes look at each opera’s gestation, including its inspiration and source material, and biographical sketches of the composer and librettist. Students will receive a handout that contains a plot summary, background information, and recommended recordings and videos for each opera.
