April 25 First News: Federal Report on WIPP Blames Lack of Oversight for Radiation Release (Listen)

A Department of Energy report blames lack of proper oversight for the radiation release that closed down the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant in February.  The report notes that many employees indicated a reluctance to report problems due to a fear of retribution and the perception that no remedial action would be taken. Senators Tom Udall and Martin Heinrich issued a statement demanding corrective action to ensure safe operation of WIPP

New Mexico will be participating in a nationwide drug take-back day tomorrow. Drugs will be collected from 10 am to 2 pm. In Santa Fe, drugs can be turned in at Albertson’s in DeVargas Center-- or at the State Police district office at 4491 Cerrillos Rd. For additional locations out of town, check at N-M-Health-dot-org. The effort seeks to keep unused prescription drugs from being accessed by children and addicts.

In Taos, prosecutors dropped charges against the teenage son of a Tennessee woman who fled from police during a traffic stop last October.  The teenager got out of the car apparently to help his mother. A video of a New Mexico State Police officer shooting at the fleeing van went viral on the internet.  The charge was dropped against the teenager after he participated in a restorative justice circle with prosecutors.

A grand jury has indicted an Albuquerque man for hate crimes. He is charged with posting threatening notes with racial slurs on the door of a Nob Hill Jewish deli. 58-year-old John Ng (pronounced “ing”) remains in federal custody pending a psychiatric evaluation. He faces two hate crime charges.

The New Mexico Medical Cannabis Program’s Medical Advisory Board voted Wednesday unanimously to add Alzheimer’s patients to the list of people who qualify for medical marijuana. But KRQE-TV reports the New Mexico Alzheimer’s Association claims there is not enough evidence to prove that the drug would help. Communications Director Jamie Frye saying national research isn’t applicable to humans yet.  A spokeswoman with the New Mexico Drug Policy Alliance has chimed-in, saying medical cannabis can be of help—aiding people with Alzheimer’s sleep and decrease brain inflammation.

Following a year-long pilot project, the Santa Fe Parking Division will install some200 credit card~ enabled parking meters on portions of core downtown streets around the Plaza. Installation begins Tuesday. The new meters are reportedly more reliable, calling for service wirelessly, but they won’t accept the old cash-key, which can still be used in older city meters that will remain in most locations.
